GLASS TILES INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE GUIDE
GLASS TILE INSTALLATION & MAINTENANCE GUIDE
PRODUCT OVERVIEW
Glass tile is a decorative surfacing material manufactured from recycled or virgin glass and is available in a variety of colors, finishes, transparencies, textures, and formats. Glass tile is commonly used in residential and commercial applications including backsplashes, walls, showers, pools, spas, and decorative installations.
Glass tile products may exhibit variations in color, transparency, opacity, texture, backing appearance, reflective qualities, and light transmission. These characteristics are inherent to the manufacturing process and contribute to the unique appearance of the material.
GLASS TILE CHARACTERISTICS
Glass tile may exhibit:
· Color variation
· Transparency variation
· Opacity variation
· Surface texture variation
· Reflective variation
· Minor bubbles
· Edge irregularities
· Backing variation
· Sheet-to-sheet variation
· Handcrafted appearance characteristics
These characteristics are inherent to many glass tile products and are not considered manufacturing defects.
Samples, photographs, showroom displays, website images, and printed materials are intended only as general representations and may not precisely match the material received.
Tile Club recommends blending material from multiple cartons during installation to achieve the most aesthetically pleasing result.

SITE CONDITIONS
Prior to installation:
· Building must be enclosed and weather-tight.
· HVAC systems should be operational where applicable.
· Surface and ambient temperatures should remain between 50°F and 100°F (10°C–38°C).
· Substrates must be fully cured and structurally sound.
SUBSTRATE REQUIREMENTS
All substrates must be:
· Structurally sound
· Clean and dry
· Properly cured
· Flat and level
· Free of contaminants
· Prepared according to ANSI and TCNA standards
Maximum Allowable Variation
For glass tile installations:
· Maximum variation of 1/8” in 10 feet
· Maximum variation of 1/16” in 24 inches
Glass tile may reveal substrate imperfections, uneven surfaces, mortar ridges, and irregularities. Proper substrate preparation is critical.
LAYOUT REQUIREMENTS
Proper layout planning is critical to achieving a professional installation.
Dry Layout
Prior to installation:
· Measure and verify installation areas.
· Establish reference lines and focal points.
· Blend tile from multiple cartons.
· Verify orientation and sheet alignment.
· Review cuts and transitions.
· Confirm pattern placement where applicable.
Sheet Alignment
For mosaic installations:
· Carefully align sheets during installation.
· Avoid visible sheet lines.
· Adjust individual pieces as needed to achieve a uniform appearance.
Grout Joints
· Maintain consistent grout joints.
· Follow manufacturer recommendations.
· Do not butt-joint glass tile.
Movement Joints
Movement joints must comply with TCNA EJ171 guidelines and should be installed:
· Around room perimeters
· At changes in plane
· At transitions between materials
· Around restraining surfaces
· At intervals recommended by industry standards
INSTALLATION
Tile Club recommends installation by a qualified tile professional familiar with glass tile installation methods.
Setting Materials
Use only premium white mortars approved for glass tile installations.
Recommended materials include:
· ANSI A118.4 modified thin-set mortar
· ANSI A118.15 high-performance thin-set mortar
· Glass tile-approved setting materials
Important Mortar Considerations
White mortars are strongly recommended for most glass tile installations.
Dark mortars, gray mortars, mastic adhesives, and incompatible setting materials may alter the appearance of translucent glass tile and should not be used unless specifically approved by the manufacturer.
Tile Club recommends performing a small mock-up installation prior to full installation to confirm mortar, grout, and glass tile compatibility.
Mortar Coverage Requirements
· Interior dry areas: Minimum 80% coverage
· Wet areas: Minimum 95% coverage
· Exterior installations: Minimum 95% coverage
Full and uniform mortar coverage is essential to minimize visible voids behind translucent glass tile.
Tile Placement
· Press tile firmly into fresh mortar.
· Periodically remove tiles to verify coverage.
· Eliminate voids and air pockets.
· Remove excess mortar from joints before curing.
Allow mortar to cure fully before grouting.
CUTTING & FABRICATION
Glass tile should be cut using:
· Wet saws equipped with glass-specific diamond blades
· Glass scoring tools where appropriate
· Diamond hole saws for plumbing and electrical penetrations
To reduce chipping:
· Cut slowly and steadily.
· Support tile properly during cutting.
· Use high-quality blades designed for glass tile.
Minor edge chipping resulting from field cutting may occur and is not considered a manufacturing defect.
GROUTING
Allow mortar to cure completely before grouting.
Recommended Grouts
For most glass tile installations, Tile Club recommends:
· Premium non-sanded grout
· High-performance non-sanded grout
· Manufacturer-approved grout systems
Non-sanded grout is generally recommended for glass tile installations with grout joints up to 1/8”.
Important Grout Considerations
Some glass tile surfaces may be susceptible to scratching from sanded grouts and abrasive installation methods.
Prior to grouting:
· Test grout in an inconspicuous area.
· Verify grout compatibility with the tile surface.
· Follow tile and grout manufacturer recommendations.
· Avoid abrasive cleanup methods.
· Use clean water and non-abrasive sponges during installation.
Sanded Grouts
Certain glass tile products with wider grout joints may be compatible with sanded or specialty grouts. Always verify compatibility with both the tile manufacturer and grout manufacturer before installation.
Epoxy Grouts
Epoxy grouts may be suitable for certain glass tile installations, including:
· Swimming pools
· Spas
· Water features
· Commercial applications
· High-moisture environments
Always confirm compatibility with both the tile manufacturer and grout manufacturer prior to installation.
Grout Cleanup
Remove grout haze promptly according to grout manufacturer instructions.
Do not allow grout residue to cure on the tile surface.
Improper grout selection, installation methods, or cleanup procedures may result in scratching or damage to glass tile surfaces.
SEALING
Glass tile itself does not require sealing.
Grout Sealing
Sealing grout joints may be recommended depending on grout type and installation environment.
Follow grout and sealer manufacturer recommendations.
CLEANING & MAINTENANCE
To preserve the appearance of glass tile:
Routine Cleaning
· Clean regularly using a soft cloth or sponge.
· Use pH-neutral cleaners.
· Rinse thoroughly after cleaning.
· Dry surfaces to minimize water spotting.
Avoid
Do not use:
· Abrasive cleaning pads
· Steel wool
· Harsh scouring powders
· Acid-based cleaners
· Harsh alkaline cleaners
· Abrasive brushes
Spill Management
Promptly remove soap residue, hard water deposits, and contaminants to maintain the appearance of glass tile surfaces.
Always test cleaning products in an inconspicuous area prior to full application.
SHOWER & WET AREA INSTALLATIONS
Tile and grout are not waterproof systems.
Wet-area installations require:
· Waterproof membranes
· Proper drainage
· Appropriate slope to drains
· Industry-approved installation methods
Waterproofing must be provided by the substrate preparation and membrane assembly.
INSTALLATION STANDARDS
Installations should comply with the latest editions of:
· Tile Council of North America (TCNA) Handbook
· ANSI A108 Standards
· ANSI A137.2 Glass Tile Standards
· Applicable local building codes
· Setting material manufacturer instructions
When requirements differ, the more stringent standard shall apply.
