Mother of Pearl Tile Installation & Maintenance Guide
Tile Club’s Mother of Pearl Collection features natural shell mosaic tile with soft colos, organic variation, and an iridescent reflective surface. Each piece is formed from natural shell, so color and size variation should be expected.
Mother of Pearl is designed for approved interior walls, backsplashes, shower walls, and light foot traffic areas. Its natural shell surface requires careful installation, white adhesive, non-sanded grout, and gentle maintenance.
Because shell can be sensitive to sunlight, excessive moisture, and harsh cleaners, proper placement and care are important.
Before beginning your project, please review the following recommendations and confirm the most current specifications, approved applications, and installation guidance.
1. Pre-Installation Inspection
Inspect Before Installation
Inspect all tile before installation. Installing the material confirms acceptance of the product’s appearance, color variation, size variation, surface finish, sheet alignment, and overall condition.
Please contact Tile Club with any questions about product acceptability, visual variation, or suitability before installation begins.
Dry Layout Recommended
Lay out the mosaic sheets before installation to review shell variation, sheet alignment, joint spacing, color blend, and overall finished appearance.
This step is especially important for natural shell mosaics because tone, reflection, and sheet fit can vary from piece to piece.
Installation Responsibility
Tile Club is not responsible for improper installation, installation workmanship, or issues that occur after the material has been installed.
Final responsibility for proper installation rests with the installer and end user.
2. Recommended Applications
Mother of Pearl natural shell mosaic tile may be suitable for the following applications when confirmed for the specific product:
Interior walls
Kitchen backsplashes
Bathroom backsplashes
Shower walls
Light foot traffic areas
Important Usage Notes
Mother of Pearl tile is not recommended for:
Swimming pools
Steam showers
Exterior use
Direct sunlight, as fading may occur over time
Excessively wet areas, such as wet rooms
Mother of Pearl may be used in showers when approved for the specific product, but it is not recommended for areas with excessive or prolonged water exposure.
Always refer to the applicable Tile Club product page and Product Specifications section to determine suitability for your desired installation. Some products may not be suitable for every application listed above.
For areas exposed to extreme temperatures, including fireplace hearths or areas behind cooktops, confirm suitability before installation.

3. Installation Recommendations
Tile Club strongly recommends using a licensed tile professional familiar with current NTCA, ASTM, and ANSI installation standards.
Because Mother of Pearl is a natural shell mosaic, proper substrate preparation, adhesive selection, cutting, grouting, and waterproofing are important to protect the finished installation.
Surface Preparation
Install Mother of Pearl mosaic tile over a firmly fixed, flat, clean, dry substrate.
The surface must be free of dust, oil, paint, sealers, and any other contaminants that could affect adhesion.
Wet areas require appropriate substrates, such as concrete, cement board, compressed sheet, and/or treated plywood. Reinforced waterproof membranes are recommended where applicable.
Curved Surface Installation
Mother of Pearl shell mosaic tile may be installed around gently curved surfaces.
Some tile adjustments may be required to create a uniform finished appearance.
Setting Material Considerations
Use the correct adhesive, grout, and sealants for natural shell mosaic tile. Incorrect setting materials may damage the color, reflection, or beauty of the shell surface.
Because Mother of Pearl shell tile is translucent, use white adhesive to help preserve the intended appearance.
Follow the adhesive and grout manufacturer’s instructions carefully. Clean excess adhesive from the tile surface with a damp cloth or sponge before it fully dries.
Cutting Recommendations
Shell pieces may be cut with:
Curved splitting clamp
Glass cutter
Wet saw
Mesh backing or plastic fronts may be cut with a utility knife.
Cut slowly and carefully to help protect the shell surface and mosaic sheet structure.
Tight Joint Mosaic Installation
Tight joint Mother of Pearl mosaic formats may require 40–50% additional installation time compared with standard mosaic tile.
Use a qualified licensed installer for these formats. Always dry lay the material before installation and join sheets tightly to reduce the appearance of large openings.
If sheets do not interlock properly, turn or adjust the sheet to check whether the opposite side fits better. Some pieces may require adjustment or trimming to improve sheet-to-sheet alignment.
Some joints between sheets may still be noticeable after adjustment and trimming. This is normal for tight joint mosaics and is not considered a product defect.
Grouting Considerations
Grouting may begin after the tile is firmly set, typically approximately 24 hours after installation.
Use non-sanded grout to help avoid abrasion of the shell surface. Non-sanded grout is recommended for grout joints that are 1/8” or less and for tiles susceptible to abrasion.
Grout joints should be fully packed and free of voids and pits.
Clean excess grout from the surface while the grout is still fresh and before it hardens.
Before grouting the full installation, test in a small area to confirm that the shell surface does not scratch during grouting.
4. Recommended Setting Materials
Use setting materials appropriate for natural shell mosaic tile and the specific installation area.
Recommended Mortar
LATICRETE® Glass Tile Adhesive Mortar
Or equivalent white adhesive suitable for translucent natural shell mosaic tile
Recommended Grout
LATICRETE® Unsanded Grout #1600
Or equivalent non-sanded grout suitable for natural shell mosaic tile
Recommended Sealer
Dupont™ water-based sealer
Or equivalent sealer suitable for natural shell surfaces
Always follow the setting material and sealer manufacturer’s instructions, coverage rates, cure times, and substrate requirements.
5. Care & Maintenance
Mother of Pearl shell tile should be cleaned and maintained regularly to preserve its natural beauty and reflective surface.
Routine Cleaning
Clean the mosaic surface with:
Mild pH-neutral detergent cleaner
Damp sponge
Soft rag or cloth
Use gentle cleaning methods to help protect the natural shell surface and grout.
Avoid Harsh Products
Do not use:
Acidic cleaners
Alkaline cleaners
Solvent-based cleaners
Abrasive cleaning products
Wax treatments
Bleach or cleaning solutions left sitting on the surface
These products may damage or discolor the shell tile and grout.
Prompt Stain Removal
Do not allow stains, soap residue, or cleaning solutions to remain on the mosaic surface for extended periods.
Clean spills and residue promptly to help maintain the tile’s appearance.
Test Cleaners First
Always test any cleaning product in a small, inconspicuous area before using it across the full installation.
Acceptable cleaners for natural shell surfaces may be available through Tile Club or other tile dealers.
