After years of yearning for a light, colorful kitchen that restored their home’s original midcentury touches while adding modern flair, a Plymouth family got their wish—down to the exact details.

Taylor Morrill and Declan McCrory’s Plymouth kitchen wasn’t just outdated—it was unsafe.

A previous homeowner’s renovation in the 1970s put the gas range on a peninsula right in the walkway between a back door, the dining area, and the rest of the kitchen. For a family with two young girls, it was a recipe for disaster.

But while Taylor and Declan had wanted to renovate the kitchen since they purchased the 1958 midcentury modern house in 2018 (before the girls were born), life and budgeting got in the way, until the appliances slowly started dying, one by one.

“We thought, if we’re gonna do it, we’re gonna do it,” Taylor says. “And as soon as I saw Lidia [Valdivia, owner of Moonstone Design and Build] on Instagram, I was like, Oh my God, I love everything because it’s not gray.”

Valdivia and Taylor were a match made in design heaven: Both are lovers of color, texture, and statement tile.

Beyond the Surface

The first selection homeowners Taylor Morrill and Declan McCrory made was the organic-looking pink ceramic backsplash tile by Luna Arc, from Tile Club—which reminded Taylor of the couple’s Spanish and Moroccan honeymoon. And as a bonus, the Moonstone Design and Build team had enough backsplash tile left over to make a custom hood with sharp lines and tile on each side. “It feels like a piece of furniture in the kitchen rather than a regular hood,” Moonstone owner Lidia Valdivia says.
