Backsplash tile is ideal for protecting the wall behind the stove, sink, and countertops from splashes, stains, and moisture while giving the room a more finished appearance. Different layouts, including running bond, vertical stack, herringbone, and chevron, can also change the overall look of the same tile and help personalize the design.

Backsplash Tile: Mosaic and Subway Tiles for Kitchen, Bathroom

Glass, glazed ceramic, and porcelain are ideal for backsplashes because they are non-porous, easy to wipe down, and resist the heat and grease generated from your stove and prep areas.

Not necessarily. Most homeowners focus on the high-impact "splash zones" directly behind the range and the sink. This targeted approach protects your drywall from moisture and cooking splatters where it matters most.

For standard ceramic and glass backsplash tiles, warm water and a mild dish soap are usually enough to cut through cooking grease. We highly recommend sealing your grout lines after installation to prevent oils and tomato sauce from permanently staining the porous grout.

The tiles themselves—especially glass and glazed ceramic—typically do not need sealing. However, the grout lines absolutely must be sealed after installation to prevent food splatters and liquids from penetrating and staining the porous material.

Traditionally, a backsplash starts at the countertop and ends at the bottom of the upper cabinets. However, a popular modern design trend is taking the tile all the way up to the ceiling around windows or range hoods for a more dramatic effect.
