Mother of Pearl Tile Installation and Maintenance Guide

MOTHER OF PEARL TILE OVERVIEW

Mother of Pearl mosaic tile is crafted from natural shell material harvested from marine mollusks. Renowned for its luminous iridescence and unique beauty, Mother of Pearl is commonly used in decorative interior applications such as backsplashes, feature walls, bathroom walls, and accent installations.

Because Mother of Pearl is a natural shell product, each piece is unique and may exhibit variations in color, iridescence, texture, thickness, pattern, and surface appearance. These characteristics are inherent to the material and contribute to its distinctive beauty.

NATURAL SHELL CHARACTERISTICS

Mother of Pearl mosaic tile may exhibit:

·       Iridescence variation

·       Color variation

·       Surface texture variation

·       Natural shell markings

·       Thickness variation

·       Pattern variation

·       Mineral inclusions

·       Natural growth characteristics

·       Sheet-to-sheet variation

These characteristics are inherent to natural shell products and should not be considered manufacturing defects.

Samples, photographs, showroom displays, website images, and printed materials are intended only as general representations and may not accurately depict the full range of variation present in the material received.

Tile Club strongly recommends blending material from multiple cartons prior to installation.

INSPECTION REQUIREMENTS

Inspect Before Installation

·       High-moisture environments

·       Commercial kitchens

·       Exterior applications

·       Submerged applications

·       Steam rooms

·       High-traffic areas

·       Applications exceeding published product specifications

SITE CONDITIONS

Prior to installation:

·       Building must be enclosed and weather-tight.

·       HVAC systems should be operational where applicable.

·       Surface and ambient temperatures should remain between 50°F and 100°F (10°C–38°C).

·       Substrates must be fully cured and structurally sound.

SUBSTRATE REQUIREMENTS

All substrates must be:

·       Structurally sound

·       Clean and dry

·       Properly cured

·       Flat and level

·       Free of contaminants

·       Prepared according to ANSI and TCNA standards

Maximum Allowable Variation

For mosaic tile installations:

·       Maximum variation of 1/8” in 10 feet

·       Maximum variation of 1/16” in 24 inches

Smooth substrates are critical to achieving a uniform installation appearance.

LAYOUT REQUIREMENTS

Proper layout planning is critical to achieving a professional installation.

Dry Layout

Prior to installation:

·       Measure installation areas.

·       Establish reference lines.

·       Blend sheets from multiple cartons.

·       Review color and iridescence distribution.

·       Verify sheet alignment.

·       Review cuts and transitions.

Sheet Alignment

For mosaic installations:

·       Carefully align sheets during installation.

·       Minimize visible sheet lines.

·       Adjust individual pieces as necessary to achieve a uniform appearance.

Grout Joints

·       Maintain consistent grout joints.

·       Follow manufacturer recommendations.

·       Do not butt-joint tile.

Movement Joints

Movement joints must comply with TCNA EJ171 guidelines and should be installed:

·       Around room perimeters

·       At changes in plane

·       At transitions between materials

·       Around restraining surfaces

·       At intervals recommended by industry standards

INSTALLATION

Tile Club recommends installation by a qualified tile professional familiar with decorative mosaic materials.

Setting Materials

Use only premium white mortars approved for natural shell products.

Recommended materials include:

·       ANSI A118.4 modified thin-set mortar

·       ANSI A118.15 high-performance thin-set mortar

·       Manufacturer-approved setting materials

Important Mortar Considerations

White mortars are strongly recommended for all Mother of Pearl installations.

Dark mortars, gray mortars, mastics, and incompatible adhesives may alter the appearance of shell materials and should not be used unless specifically approved.

Tile Club recommends performing a small mock-up installation prior to full installation to verify mortar, grout, and shell compatibility.

Mortar Coverage Requirements

·       Interior dry areas: Minimum 80% coverage

·       Wet areas: Minimum 95% coverage

Tile Placement

·       Press sheets firmly into fresh mortar.

·       Verify complete mortar coverage.

·       Eliminate voids behind shell pieces.

·       Remove excess mortar from joints before curing.

Allow mortar to cure fully before grouting.

CUTTING & FABRICATION

Mother of Pearl tile should be cut using:

·       Wet saws equipped with fine diamond blades

·       Specialized mosaic cutting tools

·       Diamond hole saws where necessary

To minimize chipping:

·       Cut slowly and carefully.

·       Support material properly during cutting.

·       Handle sheets gently.

Minor edge chipping may occur during field cutting and is not considered a manufacturing defect.

GROUTING

Allow mortar to cure completely before grouting.

Recommended Grouts

For most Mother of Pearl installations, Tile Club recommends:

·       Premium non-sanded grout

·       High-performance non-sanded grout

·       Manufacturer-approved grout systems

Non-sanded grout is strongly recommended for grout joints up to 1/8”.

Important Grout Considerations

Shell surfaces may be susceptible to scratching.

Prior to grouting:

·       Test grout in an inconspicuous area.

·       Verify compatibility with the tile surface.

·       Avoid abrasive cleanup methods.

·       Use clean water and non-abrasive sponges.

Grout Cleanup

Remove grout haze promptly according to grout manufacturer instructions.

Do not allow grout residue to cure on shell surfaces.

Improper grout selection or cleanup procedures may result in scratching or damage.

SEALING

Mother of Pearl itself typically does not require sealing.

Grout Sealing

Sealing grout joints may be recommended depending on grout type and installation environment.

Follow grout and sealer manufacturer recommendations.

CLEANING & MAINTENANCE

To preserve the appearance of Mother of Pearl mosaic tile:

Routine Cleaning

·       Clean regularly using a soft cloth or sponge.

·       Use pH-neutral cleaners.

·       Rinse thoroughly after cleaning.

·       Dry surfaces after cleaning.

Avoid

Do not use:

·       Vinegar

·       Acidic cleaners

·       Bleach

·       Abrasive pads

·       Steel wool

·       Harsh alkaline cleaners

·       Scouring powders

·       Solvent-based cleaners

These products may permanently damage shell surfaces.

Spill Management

Promptly remove:

·       Cosmetics

·       Oils

·       Household chemicals

·       Colored liquids

Always test cleaning products in an inconspicuous area prior to full application.

SHOWER & WET AREA INSTALLATIONS

Tile and grout are not waterproof systems.

Wet-area installations require:

·       Waterproof membranes

·       Proper drainage

·       Appropriate slope to drains

·       Industry-approved installation methods

Waterproofing must be provided by the substrate preparation and membrane assembly.

Routine inspection and maintenance are especially important in wet environments.

INSTALLATION STANDARDS

Installations should comply with the latest editions of:

·       Tile Council of North America (TCNA) Handbook

·       ANSI A108 Standards

·       Applicable local building codes

·       Setting material manufacturer instructions

When requirements differ, the more stringent standard shall apply.
