Is there a way to lay the tile so you don't see a matrix of grout lines like a tick tack toe board?

Yes, this is possible, the trick is to apply the mosaic with uniform spaces between the sheets for a harmonious overall effect. The matrix of grout lines typically becomes apparent when the grout widths are more wide or narrow, relative to the overall mosaic design.
