For this first episode, our Digital Marketing Specialist, Lindsay Fluckiger, sat down with interior designer Nicole Mackelprang. Nicole and her husband began documenting the building of their home on their social media and through their blog, Our Lake Point Farmhouse. Starting the blog allowed them to document their growth in DIY home improvement while growing their amazing community, and collaborating with amazing brands.
We’re so proud to be one of the brands that partnered with Nicole and her husband on their building journey! In this episode, Lindsay and Nicole discussed Nicole’s first experience installing tiles, as well as their design journey when creating their basement bar area.
Nicole and her husband tackled the DIY installation of their own basement bar! They wanted an open and airy space to entertain, but knew they didn’t have a lot of natural light. To make the most of the ambiance, they used our Mallorca White ceramic square tiles from cabinet to ceiling, creating a statement backsplash.
The subtle pearlescent finish of the glaze was a beautiful choice for the low light in their basement bar, and the affordable cost for the handmade tile look allowed them to tile from counter to ceiling rather than their original plans to just go up to the floating shelves. The result? A statement backsplash that perfectly fit their space!
Next up for these two? Their basement bathroom! They’re just waiting on the restock of our Japandi Slat Wall tiles to create a statement wall behind their free-standing bathtub. The wood-look porcelain tile is the perfect choice for this mountain modern bathroom design!
Growing up, I looked up to my mom a lot because she designed our house and everything was always in order. When we got an opportunity to have our own house we took the opportunity to just express ourselves. My style has actually changed a lot over the last few years. It went from a really farmhouse style to now a little bit more mountain modern, I guess you would say. It's really been really fun to just kind of see our home transform based on our personal styles.
There was a huge phase last year where everyone was sticking with neutrals, just safe colors. One of the biggest trends this year is bold color choices like green and blue for larger areas like kitchen backsplashes or bathroom walls. These colors bring a lot of life to a space and can really make a statement. Big tiles and big colors are in right now!
Another trend is using textured tiles, like those with geometric patterns or raised surfaces. This adds a unique touch to any room and can make it stand out from the rest.
Wood textures on tiles are really fun with marble for a mix and match look. This creates a really unique space in people's homes.
We’re seeing a lot of creative uses for tiles, especially when it comes to accent pieces. People are playing around with different shapes and sizes of tiles to create interesting design elements, like geometric patterns or even mosaics. There are also some really interesting textures that can be added to traditional tile designs, like wood-look options or marble-textured tiles.
When it comes to materials, ceramic tile is still a popular choice due to its durability and affordability. Porcelain and stone tiles are also gaining in popularity, as they tend to be more resistant to stains and scratches. Additionally, if you’re looking for longevity, darker colors or patterned tiles can be an excellent choice as they won’t fade over time like lighter shades. Lastly, it’s always important to make sure your tile installation is done correctly by a professional because this will ensure that your project lasts longer and looks better in the long run.

Cost is always an important factor when selecting a tile for your home renovation project. The price will vary depending on the size, material, and color of the tile but there are some great deals to be found if you know where to look. Shopping online has become increasingly popular over the past few years and there are now more options than ever before.
Ultimately, it’s best to do your research and compare prices before making any decisions. Of course, Tile Club has always been a great resource for finding great deals on tile and I have an exclusive discount code for our listeners!
Textured tiles are gaining in popularity and we’re also seeing a lot of people experimenting with modular tiles. Modular tiles are great for creating unique designs like herringbone or chevron patterns while still keeping the cost down. Additionally, natural stone-look tiles such as marble, slate, and quartzite are becoming increasingly popular for both interior and exterior applications. There’s a lot of exciting styles to choose from when it comes to tile design this year!
My advice would be to take your time and don’t rush into making a decision. It’s important to research different tile options, compare prices, and think about the installation process before deciding on anything. Additionally, it can be helpful to focus on finding tiles that will add value to your home in the long run as opposed to just focusing on aesthetics. Lastly, don’t forget to take advantage of any discounts or special offers that may be available!
Thanks so much for joining us, Nicole, and for sharing all your insights about tile trends for 2023. We really appreciate it!
